Oh-HiHell-No
Ohio wasnβt having it.
Not even a little fucking bit.
Republicans just keep on finding the fuck out, donβt they? Itβs the one thing theyβre actually pretty good at.
They excel at hateful dumbfuckery too, but I digress.
They really thought (and I realize that using the word βthoughtβ there is a bit of a stretch) but they really fβng thought to themselves, βIf we just violate the Constitutional rights of the people of our state, and give them LESS power, we can make sure abortion stays banned here! No one will even notice! Itβs GENIUS!β
βHey, John Fellow Republican, the voters here want to put an abortion amendment on the ballot in November, and we canβt let that happen. These measures have been passing in other states by just under 60% what should we do?β
βWell, Greg, my white upper-middle class cisgendered brother from another mother, we should just change the threshold to pass the amendment from 50% plus 1, to SIXTY PERCENT!! Then, theyβre sure to fail!β
βBut itβs been 50% for more than a 100 years, Johnβ¦ wonβt our constituents get mad?β
βNah - theyβll never even know. Weβll have a super sneaky special election in august, ya know like the kind we said last year weβd never, ever do again, no one will pay any attention or vote. We got this!β
[$20 million dollars and one VERY PISSED OFF and FIRED UP constituency later turns out they did not in fact βhave thisβ]
The fucking idiots.
Look, the state of Ohio is near and dear to my heart. My kids and I have been spending Thanksgiving there for as long as theyβve been alive. Weβve been there dozens of times, and weβve always enjoyed our time there. And I gotta say, itβs hard knowing how red so much of that state is, but what we saw in last nightβs results, is that attacking democracy isnβt nearly as partisan an issue as those Republican idiots thought it was.
Lots and lots of folks who voted for trump and Vance, voted no on this. Because at the end of the day, this was about giving a clear minority of people more power than the majority.
And that is not the fuck how democracy works.
From trumpβs coordinated coup attempt to this blatant power grab in Ohio, to gerrymandering and all of the shit the GOP is pulling with our rights, our public schools and our ability to vote, we all know that American democracy is under attack.
The Republican party is itβs death throes.
They are facing their very extinction.
And what will they do to survive?
To cling to the power slipping through their grubby little fingers?
Whatever it takes.
Lie.
Cheat.
Steal.
Dismantle our Democracy itself.
The American electorate is changing.
And the republican party refuses to change along with it.
Instead, what theyβre trying to do is to stop those changes from happening all together.
Theyβre trying to force the American people to be something we are not.
Theyβre trying to force us to go backwards in time and not forward.
They are trying to strip us of the very rights which make this country so special.
Rights far too long denied to far too many people. Rights fought for. And died for.
Rights for the most marginalized among us.
But Republicans know that more rights for more voters is very bad for them.
And they know that so they cheat.
Theyβre trying to stifle our will.
But we arenβt going to let them.
The will of the American people is diverse and multifaceted, shaped by a wide range of beliefs, values, and perspectives. It encompasses a desire for freedom, democracy, equality, and individual rights.
The will of the American people is strong, itβs independent and it is historically resilient.
And we will not sit idly by while a bunch of bullies try to keep us down or force us to conform.
Let the special August election in Ohio be both a lesson and a warning for the Republican Party.
We wonβt give up our rights without a fight.
What Ohio showed us this week, is that it doesnβt matter which party you belong to.
When it comes to protecting our democracy, this is not a partisan issue.
Itβs an American one.
Democracy is alive and kicking. Itβs taken more than a few jabs to the face, especially recently, but it just keeps standing up and punching back.
Itβs far from perfect, but it is worth fighting for so we can continue the work of perfecting it.
And we have only just begun to fight.
I wonder how many issues would be solved if Biden offered to move any and all willing persons to Russia where they can all be cis-hetero pasty whites until they die from it and enjoy the fruits of the authoritarian rule they think they crave.
One caveat; no takesies-backsies. You go, you stay gone. No more citizenship for you. You will be treated as the enemy of the US you are, not the ally you pretend to be when the cameras are rolling.
When scotus overturned roe they stepped in it big time. A lot of women became one issue voters.
