To be clear here, Brian Kemp is not in fact, a hero.
The guy is rabidly anti-choice and believes that abortion should be illegal even in cases of rape or incest. He pushed the same “no CRT in our schools” bullshit propaganda as DeSantis, Abbott and Sanders, etc… despite the fact that it was not being taught in primary education at all. And while he did do the right thing by certifying the 2020 election, it was literally his duty by law, and even then, despite the clear evidence on the ground, he still helped keep alive the Republican scrutiny of absentee ballots and even called for a “signature match” audit.
He put additional voter suppression restrictions into place to limit absentee ballots & reduce the number of dropbox locations in a given county. All in an effort to hopefully make sure that he was never again on the wrong end of a tiny-hands Trumpian plot to reverse election results. Annnnd, by the way… even after he was mercilessly attacked by the guy he refused to help flip the election, he later admitted that he would vote for him again anyway. I mean, come ON!
So, Martin Luther King Jr he is not.
He is no hero out there bravely standing alone for that which is right. He’s an elected official who did his job. He upheld the oath he took. He followed the Constitution. And while that SHOULD NOT be remarkable in American government, in the cult of personality that is MAGA, the seemingly simple act of telling the truth is extraordinary.
It IS noteworthy. If not exactly praiseworthy.
Because we all know that it is an aberration. The exception, not the rule. The truth is the mortal enemy of today’s GOP, and that Constitution they love to blab about when they’re Second amendmenting all over the place, is nothing but a whole bunch of frustratingly out-dated constraints on their endlessly grandiose grabs for power.
Laws are inconvenient obstructions to their objectives.
The Republican Party en masse is working towards destroying the Constitution, so when one of their own, someone like Pence or Kemp goes rogue and abides by the document they’re all sworn to uphold, it makes them very, very angry. Because it’s Team Trump, not Team Democracy. And how the Fuck dare anyone not fall in line.
The pressure to abandon the rule of law is strong in the cult of Trump. So strong that Mike Pence had to go all phone-a-friend and ask Dan Potatoe Quayle if maybe there was a way he could kinda sorta just a wee little bit do what his yam-dyed daddy was asking of him.
And that Pence too, did that which was required of him, doesn’t make him a hero either. But it does stand out among his all too eager to subvert democracy peers, because they would never do the same.
Imagine attending the PTA meeting in your town, and they’re voting to award a medal of outstanding service to gym teacher Paul because he hadn’t been spending all his days chucking volleyballs at the heads of 5 year olds like all the other gym teachers in the state…
This is kind of where we are now, only with fewer gym teachers and volleyballs, more democracy destabilizers, and somehow a nearly equal number of kindergartners (at least as it relates to personal responsibility, maturity, impulse control and intellectual capacity, but I digress…)
Brian Kemp announced yesterday that he would not approve a commission to remove Fani Willis. Despite mounting pressure from his own party to do so. Despite pressure from Trump himself. He refused to intervene. Stating:
'the bottom line is that in the state of Georgia, as long as I'm governor, we're going to follow the law and the Constitution…’
In an America not cohabiting with Barb in the Upside Down, that wouldn’t have made news. After all, isn’t that what they’re all SUPPOSED to be doing? Isn’t that what their constituents PUT them there to do?
